Getting to Know Your Teas: Rooibos

The Rooibos plant is a small shrubby bush that grows only in a micro-climate of South Africa. At harvest, the green rooibos leaves are dried. As the leaves oxidize, they become the deep red color, producing the infusion known also as "red tea". When the leaves are unoxidized, you have green rooibos.

Both varietals of rooibos are a good source of anti-oxidants. Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and has an anti-spasmodic effect on the body that can help to relieve stomach cramps. It is a wonderful all-day drink, and because of its soothing qualities, is especially nice in the evening.
